Golden-cracked blocks are broken with Smash: after unlocking it, press Down + Jump while airborne. First defeat Talos / The Builder in the Clock Tower and complete the movement tutorial beyond his encounter. Before that unlock, the Eastern Access Shaft’s blocked floor is opened with its falling-weight mechanism.
Check which obstacle you are looking at
| What you see | Required action | Common mix-up |
|---|---|---|
| A block or floor marked by golden cracks | Use the unlocked downward Smash. | Repeated ordinary weapon strikes do not replace the movement ability. |
| A thicker destructible floor | Start from a higher platform and Smash after a longer fall. | A short hop can produce too little impact. |
| Eastern Access Shaft floor before Talos | Align the platforms so the suspended mechanical fist can fall through. | This puzzle is designed to be opened before you own Smash. |
| Chains, a gate or a wall without golden cracks | Check its mechanism, opening side or hidden passage. | A Main Hall barricade is not automatically a Smash block. |
Reach The Builder without already having Smash
- Enter the Clock Tower and locate Eastern Access Shaft. Bring the Arcane Whip and Holy Light from the earlier story route.
- Climb the shaft and operate its platform mechanisms. Turn the obstructing beams so they no longer catch the suspended mechanical fist.
- Release the fist along the central shaft. Let that weight break the golden-cracked floor; Rose is not meant to Smash through it at this stage.
- Take the opened lower route through Foundry Apex toward the Path / Throne of the Builder. Continue through the Clock Tower’s lower machinery to Talos’s encounter.
- Finish the entire encounter, including its escape and return sequence, then claim The Builder. Continue to the separate Smash tutorial in Final Trap before leaving the area.
The video chapter linked here shows the fist mechanism, boss progression and the movement unlock. The spell Fist of Talos, the similarly named fist weapon, and Smash are distinct rewards; selecting the spell is not how you perform the downward movement attack.
Perform Smash and break a thicker floor
- Stand on a platform above the marked block and jump so Rose is airborne.
- Hold the downward direction and press the jump button. Default PlayStation input is Down + Cross; default keyboard input is S + Space. If you remapped controls, use the Jump action shown by your game.
- Keep the descent aligned with the block. The visible break and newly opened passage confirm success.
- If a reinforced floor survives a short fall, look for a higher starting point and repeat the same downward attack. The tutorial explains that the attack’s strength grows with fall distance.
- If Rose never starts the downward movement, recheck the Smash tutorial unlock before experimenting with different weapons.

The in-game tutorial shows the downward direction plus Jump while airborne, and identifies golden cracks as the destructible surface. This recording uses keyboard controls.

Return to Brauner’s Atelier in Main Hall and check the sculpture associated with The Artist. This opens the card branch needed for the Notre-Dame painting route, together with later Library progression. The Double Jump guide keeps those prerequisites in order.
Revisit marked golden-cracked passages and use the Main Hall route checks for other kinds of barriers. For The Builder’s downward-attack task, use the movement Smash rather than the Fist of Talos spell; see Works of Mercy.
