Quick answer

Reach Notre-Dame, solve its organ route and defeat Death in the Choir. Claim The Shadow, then continue through the movement tutorial immediately after the fight to unlock Double Jump. The earlier Death encounter in the Catacombs is not this unlock.

What you need before Notre-Dame

The Builder defeated; Smash unlockedSmash lets you free The Artist in Main Hall.Follow the yellow-block and Smash route.
The Artist / Masterpiece obtainedThe painting entrance reacts to this card.Check Brauner’s sculpture in Main Hall after acquiring Smash.

Masterpiece equipped at the paintingOwning the card is not the same as activating the entrance.Return to Gallery of Eternal Night with Brauner’s Paintbrush and The Artist equipped.

The entrance is the large Notre-Dame painting in Main Hall → Gallery of Eternal Night. This checklist separates the key item, the active card and the movement skills; collecting only one of them does not finish the prerequisite chain.

From the cathedral to Death

  1. Enter Notre-Dame through the activated painting. Establish your position using the region and room label on the map.
  2. Work toward the Great Organ Room. Collect and consult the melody clues available along the cathedral route.
  3. Use the patterns from those clues on the organ to clear its obstructions and open the route toward the Transept / Choir. Match your own clue symbols to the keys rather than guessing a tune.
  4. Use the nearby Mirror of Life before committing to the Death encounter. Confirm that the location is Notre-Dame, not the earlier Catacombs scene.
  5. Defeat Death in the Choir and claim The Shadow. Stay in the area for the separate movement-skill tutorial.

The organ is a progression checkpoint rather than a requirement to possess Double Jump beforehand. If the way to Death is closed, check the uncompleted melody route and unexplored cathedral branches.

Finish the tutorial, then test the second jump

  1. After collecting Death’s reward, take the newly available tutorial exit adjoining the arena. Do not teleport away as soon as the Arcana is absorbed.
  2. Follow the Double Jump tutorial prompt. Jump, then press the jump button again while Rose is airborne. Default PlayStation input uses Cross again; use your current binding on other controls.
  3. Complete the short platforming demonstration and verify the skill in your movement list. A second upward jump from one launch is the practical confirmation.
  4. If you already left after defeating Death, return to the Choir and check the tutorial exit. Repeating the earlier Catacombs encounter will not award it.
Double Jump tutorial with Rose on the upper platform beyond a yellow door

The tutorial says to press Jump again in mid-air. This room and its yellow entrance are the check after the Death encounter, separate from the Arcana reward.

Starts at the final Notre-Dame route. At 18:55 the tutorial visibly instructs a second Jump input while airborne.

Use it on your return trip

Use the second jump to gain height, then combine it with Aerial Rush when a crossing also needs horizontal distance. Check the environment first: a golden-cracked floor still calls for Smash, a grapple anchor calls for the Arcane Whip, and a closed mechanism gate needs its switch or another approach.

Return to marked branches in Main Hall with a specific obstacle in mind. Double Jump does not automatically complete a secret-zone task. Its added control also helps with the platforming sections on the four-virtue ending route.
